transformers convert voltage from one value to another. Electric
transformers are comprised of two sets of coils or windings linked by a
magnetic field. The coils are primary and secondary and function as
conductors.

Electrical Transformer
When the primary coil receives AC voltage, this produces a varying
magnetic field of voltage surrounding the conductor. The primary coil is
responding to the fluctuating current of AC voltage. The magnetic field
activates the secondary conductor coil. This results in the transformers
changing the voltage and transferring electrical energy, ideally with
the least amount of energy loss. The number of windings on each coil is
important as this determines the voltage that is conveying from the
primary to the secondary through the magnetic field. The number of
windings or turns in the primary coil to the number of turns in the
secondary coil determines the magnitude of the voltage. The core is
typically iron as this produces the most efficient magnetic coil. Once
the voltage conversion is made, the energy is transferred to the load
center and the electrical process continues from there.
Electrical transformers can also serve to isolate parts of circuits from
others. Electric transformers can be as large as the ones we see around
power lines or small enough to be tucked away in household appliances.
Electric transformers can also serve to convert as power adapters in
situations where there is a voltage difference between an electronic
component or appliance and an electrical power supply. There is a need
in AC electrical systems to continuously increase or lower the voltage
levels for efficiency and safety. Electric transformers provide for this
need marvelously since their operations is based on the fluctuating
current of AC voltage.
The incoming electrical transformers voltage is an important factor. The
three common frequencies available are 50 Hz, 60Hz, and 400 Hz. European
power is typically 50 Hz while North American power is usually 60Hz. The
400 Hz is reserved for high-powered applications such as aerospace
technologies. It is also important to consider the secondary power
specifications when evaluating transformers. Other specifications to
keep in mind when selecting an electric transformer are: the maximum
ratings of the following, secondary current and voltage rating, power
and output rating. Power transformers have various configurations
according to phase and connections. The most common phases are
single-phase and three-phase. Both the size and expense of electric
transformers increases in proportion to the number of primary windings.
Transformers utilize inductance to step-up or step-down
voltages. The construction of a transformer consists of two separate
coils of wire wrapped around a core of iron, air, or any ferromagnetic
material. While iron and ferromagnetic cores provide much higher
coupling (efficiency of induction transfer), there are significant
losses through heat generation in the core. Cores can also be shaped
differently, such as the rod and E-core designs.
Transformers are the primary reason that power transmission and
household outlets utilize alternating current. This is because
transformers allow for efficient changes in voltage that allow power to
be transferred all over the world at high voltages and low costs.
Isolation Transformers

another without electrically connecting the two.
Toroidal Transformers
are devices that transfer electrical energy from one electric
circuit to another, without changing the frequency, by

classes, for example 138 kV to 66 kV for transmission. Another
application is in industry to adapt machinery built for 480 V

Electrical
Transformers -
Electrical Transformers are devices used to raise or lower the
voltage of alternating current. For instance, power is transported
over long distance in high voltage power lines and then transformers
lower the voltage so that the power can be used by a business or household.
Isolating
Transformers -
An Isolating Transformer is a transformer, often with
symmetrical windings, which is used to decouple two circuits.
An Isolation transformer allows an AC signal or power to be taken
from one device and fed into another without electrically connecting
the two circuits. Isolation transformers block transmission of DC
signals from one circuit to the other, but allow AC signals to pass.
Transmission
Power Lines - A Transmission Line is the material medium or structure that forms

Transformer K Factor - Some transformers are now being offered
with a k-factor rating. This measure the transformer's ability to
withstand the heating effects of non-sinusoidal harmonic currents
produced by much of today's electronic equipment and certain
electrical equipment.
Primary Voltage - The coil winding that is directly connected
to the input power.
Harmonic Cancellation -
Harmonic cancellation is performed with harmonic canceling
transformers also known as phase-shifting transformers. A harmonic
canceling transformer is a relatively new power quality product for
mitigating harmonic problems in electrical distribution systems.
This type of transformer has patented built-in electromagnetic
